After children, trying to work out how much money you can take home can be challenging. Here are some estimates for how much of your income you will actually take home. For households where there are two adults that can earn, you can load a second calculator which will allow you to play with various incomes to calculate what you can take home between you.
In the UK, most taxes are calculated on an individual basis, which means that, depending on income, many families will be better off with two part-time earners rather than one full-time earner. This is because of the personal allowance, coupled with lower tax rates below £50,270 per year.
However, if the cost of your childcare wipes out your potential income or more, then you may struggle to justify working after children. Most income calculators don't account for the benefits and childcare cost subsidies that exist for people with children. This calculator will automatically add Child Benefit by default, including minusing the reduction that you will experience if either adult in the household has an adjusted net income of over £60000.
The estimates here are for the 2023/2024 tax year. An updated calculator for the 2024/2025 tax year is coming soon.
The numbers calculated here are estimates based on the UK government's tax rules as they apply to England.
