Your ability to claim tax free childcare, child benefit and 15/30 hours free childcare is affected by you and your partner's adjusted net income. Confusingly, despite it being called your "adjusted net income" it is more related to your gross income, as it doesn't take income tax, national insurance or student loan repayments into account. However pension contributions, some employment expenses and gift aid contributions are taken into account.
If you, or your partner, have an adjusted net income of more than £60,000 and you are currently claiming child benefit, you will likely be due to pay the high income child benefit charge via self assessment. You may want to use our child benefit charge reduction calculator to see how increased pension contributions will reduce your child benefit charge bill.
If you, or your partner, have an adjusted net income of more than £100,000 you will find yourself unable to claim for tax free childcare, or 30 hours funded childcare (though use our 15/30 free hours calculator to check what you are still entitled to). This could cost you £1,000s of childcare subsidies each year, so a good estimate of your adjusted net income is vital. If you want to avoid loosing this subsidy, our £100k earner calculator can help you plan around this.
you may want to look at our £100k earners calculator which is part of our premium offering. Contributing extra money to your pension, or donating extra to charity can help bring your adjusted net income down which may mean you can still access tax free childcare and funded hours. Our thorough calculator helps you to estimate the impact on your take home pay
